Welsh conference match played home at St Albans RFC on Saturday 27th June 2009

Match report and pictures by Mark Harris

Cardiff Demons put on an outstanding second half performance to record their biggest win ever against local rivals Newport Titans with a 54-18 victory at St Albans RFC.

With their first touch of the ball Newport broke on the left wing before swinging the ball to the other side of the pitch for Andrew Jenkins to open the scoring on his debut. Scott Bessants conversion attempt scraped outside the side of the post leaving the score at 0-4.

At the ten minute mark Chris Holcombe picked up the ball on his own 20m line and sprinted 50 metres and some quick hands put Mark Dando into space to level the scores.

From the kick off the Demons worked their way up the pitch and some great interplay between Matt Rogers and Andrew Bradshaw saw Rogers fly over into the corner. Holcombes conversion put the Demons into a 10-4 lead.

Minutes later the Demons were on the Titans 20m line and a great bit of individual skill saw Miles Davies extend the lead with Holcombes goal increasing the gap to 16-4.

The Titans then upped their game putting pressure on the Demons ball carriers which paid off as the Demons gave up a penalty on their own 20m line. The Titans capitalised again seeing the ball pass from one side of the pitch to the other with Bessant diving over. His conversion brought the Titans to within one score. Further good word from Newport from another Demons penalty and Andrew Jenkins picked up his second score of the Titans making the score 16-14.

It was the Demons however that had the last word in the half as they capitalised on a mistake by the Titans and saw Aaron Ellis barge is way over. Holcombe’s goal made the game 22-14.

The half time break seemed to work in the Demons favour as they blitzed the Titans with thirty two unanswered points. The Titans were struggling to overcome a number of injuries including Rob Dodgson who picked up some ligament damage in his ankle. The Demons gave no quarter with quick tries from Idris Evans, Alun Jones and Shane Goddard along with a brace Jon Trickey. The pick of the bunch came from Andrew Bradshaw who picked up a chip over the top from, man of the match, Doug Hann to touch down under the sticks. One conversion from Goddard and three from Holcombe put the Demons in an unassailable 54-14 lead.

Just before the final whistle there was just time for Andrew Jenkins to pick up his hat trick for the Titans but it was too little too late with the final score at 54-18.
